Robert Cain arrived in Liverpool in 1826
from County Cork where he was born. He was 18 years
of age and a merchant seaman and had managed to save
enough money to buy a public house (pub) with a brewhouse
attached to the property in Limekiln Lane. It was not
long before he gained a reputation for producing quality
beer from his brewery/pub.
During this period Liverpool was a busy
seaport and one of the major trading ports in England.
It also boasted many fine alehouses ( some are still
around today) and breweries. Cain's beer brewing went
from success to success and Robert gaining himself a
reputation for the quality of his traditional beers.
Such was his success that he outgrew his premises and
had to relocate to the site of a former brewhouse in
Stanhope Street where Cain's beers are still produced
today. Building started in 1883 and was finally finished
Cain's beer adopted the wining formula
of ensuring that nothing should become between customers
and to this end Robert Cain commenced on a major pub
outlet building project, opening 200 public houses designed
for the comfort of his customers. many of the were ornately
designed in the victorian style, with sumptuous furnishings
and impressive plaster work.
During the years the original Brewery
building passed from one major Brewer to another, Higsons,
Boddingtons and Whitbread to name just a few. Then finally
in 1990 the Brewery was reopened by G.B. Brewers Ltd
and in 1991 was renamed Robert Cain & Co Ltd and
is still dedicated to following the tradition of Robert
Cain, brewing good quality beers.
This success is in no small part to the
vision of Sudarghara and Ajmail Dusanj who honed there
skills in management and innovation though their ownership
of the drinks group Gardner Shaw.
Major investment in the Brewer by the
brothers have ensured the establishment of the beers
now produced, which range from traditional ales to a
new beers , Fine Raisin, have ensured that Cain's is
now recognized not only across Merseyside but also internationally.
So why not take a Brewery tour and sample
these unique beers yourself.
